Rethinking Meditation Postures: Embrace Comfort

Normally When we hear the of meditation it tends to be a practice associated with More Traditional and Specific yoga poses. Of sitting cross-legged on a floor somewhere, back perfectly straight and hands resting. But we must question that now! You need not necessarily sit in a particular posture to mediate away the right way.

Comfort is Key

The first thing I always tell my students OF NEW when they start this journey is do what ever you need to in order to be COMORTABLE. A good back position is necessary. When you feel wound up, it makes focusing on your breathing or emptying out the contents of your mind much harder. Let your body to tell you what it wants instead of making yourself fit into a certain position.

The Role of the Supportive Seat

Most beginners to meditation long for the tranquillity and centrality that come with training all by itself. That said, following a traditional sitting position religiously can put up unnecessary obstacles. Once seated, rest and allow yourself to slip into the experience — sit in a supportive chair or cushion. Meditation is about becoming in touch with who you are, not a one-size-fits-all.

Let Go of Perfection

Especially images of serene and very still looking individuals that make you believe every image has the model sitting in their ideal meditation posture. Just remember that there is no need to be perfect with looking good meditating. Your mindset is the crucial part.

Sitting in a chair, on cushion or even relying against the wall the key is to be comfortable within your own body. Give yourself permission to take it slow and go with what feels right.

Personal Preferences

I personally have experienced the greatest pleasure by simply sitting on an ordinary chair with backrest and meditating. It feels nice and mellow so I can flow through the practice without too much effort. And while it may not look as pretty for social media, the mental clarity that follows is far more attractive than any photo op.

Share Your Thoughts

Do you have a different perspective or experience with meditation postures? please share your stories! What works best for you? Got any new favourites or do you still prefer to sit in the old fashioned way?

Please share what resonated with you and how we might all be able to strengthen our practice in the diverse ways opening up for us.

Conclusion

In the end, meditation is personal discovery. Your work is to sit in all the ways… so get comfortable. What you have to remember is that the point of this exercise isnt for it look good, but rather feel good and get in touch with your Inner Self. So, sit back and finally enjoy your meditation practice—however that comes to you!
